IPM Facility at the OR Tambo SEZ
IPM has completed a four-storey State-of-the-Art industrial facility at the OR Tambo Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to produce PGM catalysts and MEA’s for fuel cells and electrolysers which will be able to provide all important local content for electrolyser and FCEV deployment in SA as well as globally.
The zero waste and emission facility will be ready for plant commissioning as from October 2024 and will be green to the maximum extent possible, with the full roof area designated for solar panels. The project will take PGMs from SA platinum mines and at full deployment will beneficiate it into MEA’s for FCEV and electrolysers at an industrial scale. We will also be able to convert PGMs into catalyst precursors and thereafter into PGM catalysts for fuel cells and electrolysers.

Hydrogen Refuelling Station Project (HRS)
Project Description
IPM’s Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) deployment project using 7 tons per day of hydrogen, located 12kms from the airport, is green to the extent that it’s produced using solar energy and can fuel up to 400 fuel cell trucks/buses in phase one at a price that is equivalent to a diesel truck/bus operation on a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) basis today. This project will between 40 000 to 80 000 tons of carbon per year which represents a significant opportunity to decarbonise the Johannesburg vehicle fleet and indeed position Gauteng and SA with one of the larger deployment projects in the world. This project offers the platform to accelerate the assembly of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) in SA has been nominated for Strategic Infrastructure Projects (SIP) status by Infrastructure SA (ISA).
