Dr Khan holds a BSc (HONS) in Chemistry and Chemical Technology from the University of Hertfordshire (UK). He also holds a PhD in fuel cell technology from the University of Surrey (UK). After his doctorate he was invited to the University of the North (South Africa) to help establish sub-Saharan Africa’s largest academic computer network for computational chemistry and physics research.
He has worked in business development for a leading US scientific software company (1998 – 2001) based in Cambridge, UK. In this role he was responsible for developing business in Africa, Scandinavia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
In 2002 he established Africa’s first hydrogen fuel cell company, which was absorbed into Intelligent Energy, a leading fuel cell developer. As managing director of Intelligent Energy South Africa Dr Khan was responsible for some of the world firsts in the industry. This included installing fuel cells to provide clean energy to rural South African clinics and communities, as well as into a Johannesburg Hospital.
His work was recognised by South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) when he was invited to be part of the core planning team that developed the continents first Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Strategy. The aim of the strategy was to create a local fuel cell value chain. It also developed technology know-how at local universities and companies. Moreover, since fuel cells use platinum catalysts the strategy fitted in with the South Africans beneficiation framework.
In 2008 he established Enerleq to provide leading edge knowledge based services in the field of fuel cells, the environment and clean energy. He has consulted for South African PGM mining companies on topics related to beneficiation of PGMs into fuel cells. He has worked with telecoms companies, governmental organisations and technology solution providers in South Africa, in Africa and globally.
In his spare time Dr Khan enjoys reading non-fiction, information technology and travelling globally. He is also a qualified private pilot.
